Can You Smoke in a Private Jet?
“Can you smoke in a private jet?” is often asked by those who have traveled in one. The short answer to this question is most likely yes, but which airline or aircraft is best qualified to make that decision is determined on an individual case by case basis. Most private jet owners are as particular about their private jets as they are about their automobiles and homes, as you should be with your own private flying preferences.
First off, if you are a chain smoker (which is what most of us tend to think of when we imagine being away from land for any lengthy period of time) then by all means, lighting up a cigarette in a private jet and taking off can be a bit of a problem. Smoking in a jet would most likely result in an airport security checkpoint and/or immediate ejection from the aircraft. Also, smoking can affect your blood pressure, affect your vision, and even slow down your reaction times. So, what’s a good alternative to smoking in a jet?
There are several “solutions” to the “can you smoke in a private jet” question. One of which is simply removing anything with a cigarette flame from the area where you will be smoking. Many times, smokers can light up another item of interest (such as a beach ball, for example) and keep their cigarettes behind the glass partition. However, keeping small enough items away from you that won’t actually start a fire can be tricky sometimes.
Another solution to the “can you smoke in a jet” question is to simply turn off your actual smoking. Yes, having to deal with the smell of cigarette smoke can be difficult to do in a commercial airline. However, you can do it at home by unplugging any electrical appliances that you’re going to be smoking while in the air. If you can’t do this, you can always pack your cigarettes in your coat pocket or briefcase and bring them with you. However, there are some airlines that actually offer special luggage tags for those that want to avoid the odor.
A third solution to the “can you smoke in a jet” question is to simply avoid smoking at all costs. This is pretty easy to do, especially if you don’t smoke a lot and the plane is not being used for smoking. Even if you are flying for a vacation, you might want to make sure you take along a cell phone, wallet, and other important documents just in case.
Of course, this isn’t always possible. If you’ve been drinking, and are now smoking, you may find that you can’t get the rest of your cabin on board without having a fit. This is particularly true if you are traveling during the winter. Even though your throat will probably be clear, the alcohol can still cause you to feel irritable. In this case, simply tell the flight attendant you’d like to light up another cigarette. They should be able to assist you with that.
If this is a problem that is caused by your health, obviously you’ll have to try to cut back on smoking. If you are traveling for business, you may have to decline any requests to take smoking breaks. You definitely want to keep your blood sugar low and avoid taking large meals. Your body will thank you when you arrive safely at your destination.
Hopefully this short article has provided you with a few tips on how to find out if you can smoke in a private jet. If you’re still unsure, you can always check with your pilot, or talk to the pilots of other commercial aircraft you are thinking of flying for a bit of advice. Smoking is never a good thing while you are cruising the skies, so make sure you follow all of the rules. If they find out, they will make sure to drop your smoking restriction from your list!
